Christmas List – cont.

Ugg boots: I have always had a soft corner for these. I know they are stumpy and ridiculous-looking. But that is the point. And right now I am stumpy and ridiculous-looking. So what better time to complete the look?

It turns out, however, that I am too cheap to actually buy the real thing, even on discount. Besides, I don't want to spend the earth on a pair of ugly, if comfortable, shoes that I can only use casually (or to work when pregnant because pregnancy excuses everything). So I decided to opt for the fake option, of which there are many around.

Finally, on New Year's Eve, I decided I had had enough to looking ridiculous in ballet flats - my hips and belly are enormous and my jeans - one of two pairs of trousers that fit me - taper off at the bottom (yes, I bought the cheapest maternity jeans I could find) making me look really weird. So, I decided to buy the fake Uggs available in the shops in the mall downstairs. (And I mean literally downstairs... my apartment sits atop a small mall which sits atop an MTR station).

Unfortunately, the lazy ass in one of the shops had decided to close that day. Never mind, I didn't like that guy anyway. My decision made for me, I headed to shop no. 2 for a pair of grey Uggs (or whatever). I had been unsure about whether grey was the way to go but now, well, I had no choice and both V and I agreed that my appearance was much improved by the chunky footwear. All thrilled, I headed home with my new boots.

It seems, however, that I am not destined to own a pair of Uggs (or faux-Uggs). All dressed up for the New Year's Eve do at a friend's place, I slipped on the shoes only to have the elastic clasp snap in my hand. So basically my new boots were broken before I had even worn them, giving a new meaning to breaking them in. Down we went to the shop, only to be told they would exchange but didn't have my size in stock. Bah!

Finally, after doing a round of the mall and finding no other shoes that worked - Chinese people have small feet! - we headed back to the shop and chose another pair of cheap boots. Which I have to say I'm very happy with. They vastly improve my appearance making me wonder why I spent a whole month looking stupid without them.

Hahah funnily enough, wearing Ugg boots here in Aus is actually quite naff - you don't do it really. It's reserved for the very young, the youthful (i.e. highschoolers and just out of highschool), lazy uni students and wannabe celebrities.

Unfortunate actually since they are extremely comfortable lol.

That's also not to say when winter rocks around every woman and their friend is donning the skinny jeans tucked into boots look.

@R's Mom yes, don't even try shoe-shopping in HK unless you want to be severely demoralised.

@Aathira It makes sense if you live in a place if the weather gets really cold. This pair is my third... and I have used the other two so much that I had to get the heels of one of them replaced. So I think they're worth it even if used only in winter, and I generally buy them on sale.

@Sig yeah, it's not the height of fashion here either. Of course, nothing that could actually be comfortable would be fashionable. Though they could be passed off as an kitch-ironic thing here. Pregnant women, I'm sure, are excused from regular fashion rules so I'm taking this chance and I am at a stage where my body shape is so odd, these actually fit in with the overall 'look' of me. I didn't want to buy regular nice boots because my feet are swollen and I have no idea what my size actually is nor do I want to accept that I am going to have fat feet forever.

Well I left mine in my old home, so since you reminded, I need to keep a watch if I can get them in India :)

So finally I know!!! I love comfortable, flat soled, warm boots in winters but I had no idea they were what was responsible for my spam being flooded! Would you believe I have had more than 40 comments at one time (in the spam folder) all from one commenter called 'ugg boots' and I never clicked on it but absent mindedly wonder who/what this was.

I have been reading your posts, and not commenting because I haven't much to add, this post though is something of an interesting eye opener :)

Googled and read all about the ugg-liest boots in Urban Dictionary - but I feel comfortable boots are pretty boots no matter what they are called :)
